What do we mean by Disability?
Having a disability means a lot of things to a lot of people. Under Social Security rules, however, disability is just a condition based on your inability to work. You may be determined to be disabled if, because of a physical or mental condition(s):
- You are not able to do work that you did before.
- You cannot adjust to other work.
- Your disability must be expected to last at least one year or result in death.
What is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)?
Social Security Disability Insurance is a federal “insurance program” for people who are unable to work because of a disability. Like other insurance programs, you must have paid into Social Security at some point to qualify. Other members of your family might also be eligible for benefits.
What is Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?
Supplemental Security Income is funded by tax revenues rather than employment contributions. It pays monthly benefits to people with disabilities who have a low-income and few material assets. Children may receive SSI benefits in some situations.
Benefits usually continue until you are able to work again on a regular basis. There are also a number of special rules, called “work incentives,” that provide continued benefits and health care coverage to help you make the transition back to work.
When will I know if my claim has been approved or denied?
Normally, the process takes between three to six months. If initially denied, reconsideration can take approximately an additional three months. A second appeal, if needed, can take substantially longer (one year or more).
How much will my monthly benefits be?
There are many factors that must be considered in the calculation. On average, SSDI benefits will replace just under half of what you were previously earning.
The national average is just over $800.
